International Migrations in Latin America:
Tendencies and Challenges in the New Millennium*
*The ideas, thoughts, and opinions expressed do not necessarily reflecte those of the OAS or of its member states. The opinions expressed are the sole responsibility of the authors.
- In your opinion, in what areas or in which ways are the effects of current Latin American migration flows most strongly felt?
- The areas or ways the effects of current Latin American migration flows are strongly felt is language. There are signs in the new environment that uses both english and spanish.
- Everybody(Goverment and International Goverment) should do to fair and develope Poverty Right , Human Right , Communication of Relationship , Education areas and ways are the effects of current Latin American migration flows of most strongly felt in our opinion.
- I think forced displacement, specially in area with internal wars going on, on the one hand, and displacement caused by misery.
- I think that the effects of LA migration is mostly felt in areas where skilled professionals are used, such as: medical sciences, high technology and sports.
- There are many factors why people migrate from one country to another. In my opinion the economical factor is the one that motivates migration. It is interesting to see that people move from country to country, in the same Latin America. For example, the migration of Nicaraguan to Costa Rica where they can find jobs, the ticos don't want to do anymore. Many countries are sending their people out from their territories because there are no job opportunities.
Still, I wouldn't say that the motives are current. They have been here for decades. Latin America is been a place were few have the chance to see progress, jobs and educational opportunities. Many governments are corrupted, and there are no plans to support the young citizens who at the end will support the country. - I am a Latin America women living in the United States and I would say that the Latin American migration flow is starting to have an impact in the way and culture of the United States. The opening of Spanish schools is not only thrilling to Latin American families but to US families that recognized the importance and advantages for their kids if they can speak Spanish and understand the culture.
- Education and health care.
- It is my opinion that migration flows affect Latin American countries including my country, Guyana, through the deportation of criminals from the host countries. I do not think particular attention is being paid to this issue, but it is becoming a source of pain for most developing countries. On average, about 100 persons per month are deported to their countries are origin leaving these nations to scramble to integrate these criminals back into society.
- The effects are most strongly felt within the food and entertainment industries. Additionally where there is an excessive amount of immigrants they eventually affect the culture of the home country.
- This all situation is due to the fact that most the latin american countries are dependent in one or may other ways to some other countries such as the United States and migration seems as the only way of progress.
- I think that the lack of sources of job our people want to migrate.
- In my opinion the areas that Latin American migration flows are most strongly felt are the economic and social habits. Migrant workers are usually illegal. This illegal status promotes non formal employment which does not pay taxes. While it is true that migrant workers also make purchases it is also true that most of their income is sent to their native country, therefore creating a scape of currency.
Social habits of migrant workers change the dynamics of a community. Migrant workers schedule is usually 10 or 12 hours a day 6 or 7 days a week. This schedule allows for little time for recreation which is then done at irregular time for the community. In many Latin American countries informal housing is also a social factor because these clusters of migrants form "barrios" where violence and delinquency goes on uncontrolled. Children of migrant workers in Latin America rarely go to school and are often left unattended. During this unattended time children are susceptible to any persuasion to a life of crime, due to money of just affection.
- How do issues related to international migrations of Latin Americans most affect you or your family?
- I am not directly affected but school places become limited. Facilities and the culture of some of the immigrants tend to overwhelm the local culture.
- There is a major issue concerning the migrations of Latin Americans that affect me and family, especialy the women in my family. We are not in the demographics that migrate to work illigaly, and we end up suffering prejudices that are destined to people we barely relate to in our own country.Getting a turist or especialy a student visa is a very burocratic process and we have to attest and prove that we have enought money to support ourselfs with a series of documents and interviews. And socialy we keep being tested to wether or not we´d be willing to work illigaly, and proving that we have intelectual capicity to attend a certain school. And what i find most distrassing and especialy avaiable is having to constatly show and reafirm that we are not sexualy avaiable. It is very distressing to confront how Latin American women are seen as.
- -Poverty Right Issue.
-Human Right Issue.
-Citizenship Issue. - Work migation related issues that affect the family, specially children because of the upheal of changing countries, friends, culture, etc.
- Up to now, we have not detected any direct influence or effect of LA migrations in our lives.
- I believe everyone have a different situation, especially when given the reasons for their migration. However, the perception of the media, and how they inform the readers about the migration issues. This information is always negative.
My mayor concern is how my kids are affected by this information. How are they treated in their surroundings, and what effects will cause in them in the future? My connection with my country of origin is still very strong even tough I migrated 20 years ago. However my kids are not connecting the way I am. It is natural I guess, but eventually will create a conflict when the time comes for me to return.
In conclusion the media is affecting the way Americans think about migrants, to the negative side. Not all the migrants are illegal. Most of the immigrants move because they want a better life. - The biggest impact to our family is the distance. My husband and I have one child and we wish we could have his grandparents visit more often or that we can go to our home country more often. As our son grows we are considering the option of sending him back to Panama (were we are from) for a few months so he can learn the culture and can identified with his Panamanian roots.
- They really don't affect directly but we are concern about the wellfare of the families that might be at risk do to unseen circunstances, ie:separation of children - parents
- Migration affects my family because it is seen as the only way to really develop and achieve your potential since there aren't many opportunities in developing countries.
- In my part of the world the caribbean, the effects on the family are minimal. However they make some contribution to family life by doing baby sitting and house work. This then translates into them having an impact on the upbriging of chidren. As for me there has been no effect except for food once in a while.
- It affects us all we`re a nation supose to be together not apart so we remember the famous saying. TOGETHER WE STAND!!!!! it changes the economical picture of every country because it changes the working embiroment, disminishing the workers harder to subside. This is just an example.
- About the separation of the family.
- In your opinion, what are the major challenges to be overcome by national or international, public or private institutions with regard to this topic?
- Human Relations. How to make a stranger feel welcome in small numbers yet challenges you in large numbers. What adjustments to make in order that these people feel at home away from home?
- I was recently living in New York and i went to a neighborhood where they had a Brazilian supermarket. The products they had there were of such a poor quality that i can´t find them in the grocerie shops i got to. All the workers in the place were Brazilian females that spoke not english what so ever, had torn clothe and rotten teeth. It was shocking to me how those women left their country to live in such a poor condition. I´m sure that that wasn´t their " American dream" but a nightmere they never expected. There are advantages to being in your own country but people get allured and oblivious to it. There should be campaings form ongs or the fedrral governments themselfs, alerting people that life in a foreign country is not easy, that living illigaly have more desadvantages then advantages. People that have money and courage to migrate are not the most misable, usualy they have some education, and with that basis and maybe the help of ongs they do have a lot of options within their own countries, if only a litle more assitance was provided.
- -To get Democracy.
-To get Poverty Right.
-To get Human Right.
-To develope Economics.
If not, the State is not maintainance the migrations. - Developing public policies that would mitigate the effects of forced or voluntary migration. Assistng family and guiding them through a very difficult proccess, specially in regard to legal issues and cultural adaptation.
- I think the major challenge turns to be the search for the real causes of migration. Each LA country has its own set of causes. Every human being seeks better life conditions. If someone has special skills or a special talents, it is expected to have a higher level life pattern. On the other hand, if the country or community does not provide conditions to the skilled professional, in order to meet his demands of patterns, he/she will migrate to a place where his objectives can be accomplished. Therefore, providing the right conditions to skilled professionals perform their jobs and achieve their objectives, is the major challenge.
- Mayor challenge is to convince the media, and the politicians of each country were people move that inmigration is a process. It is happening for thousands of years. It is a natural thing to look for better places where to live.
I understand that most countriesa are not ready and never will be ready for new migrants. However, in many countries their population is getting old, with low nataly rates making migartion an option to provide the country with new workers. - There are just so many challenges...I appreciate your article look in the family situation. I think this is an area where we may want to expand. I did not recognize the challenges that came with going overseas and the impact on the families.
- Ignorance and fearness of the unkown... Migration should not be a liability to any country. By the contrary, should be embraced and welcome as the way to really interact and include all cultures and backgrounds
- The major challenge to be overcome is the actual realisation of the Millenium Development Goals. This is the only way that the effects of migratory flows will be mitigated. Only when developing countries are given a chance to succeed in this highly globalised economy will citizens find it less appealing to migrate.
- With regardes to migration the major problems to overcome are crime and the negative impact on the culture of the home country.
- To provide better positions and salaries to people so they can survive the crisis.
- Try to help to our people, don´´t discriminate
- International institutions' biggest challenge is the uniformity in migration policy among countries. It is unacceptable that one country is forced by the international community to admit immigrants while others are allowed to deport them base on national security or the defense of a sovereign state. Every country has its own social and economic reality, therefore it most be allowed to develop and implement its own laws and policies regarding immigration.
