Scientific Literacy in Latin America: How are we doing?*

- I associate that more with activities. However, textbooks are part, and always being part of the learning process.

- In your educational institution, what level of priority is assigned to scientific and technological education?
What percentage of school (classroom) hours is assigned to it?
- I live in the US, but I grew in Costa Rica. Our educational system was deficient in providing scientific and technological education to kids when I was growing up. I see many positive changes toward the technological and scientific context programs. I believe we still need improvement, especially in terms of use of languages and their relationship with Science and technology. Latin America needs more money to be injected into education. I guess it is a good business for some countries to keep their population illiterate.
- Priority is given depending on the group of students appointed to the school. If in a certain year the scores reflect a certain tendency the curriculum priority is adjusted to suit the students. Many times science and technology are given high priority.

- I teach at the Middle and secondary level. I know that administrators and politicians are conscious about the growing use of technology and science in other countries.
