Greater Access to a Better Education for All*
In decades past many of us believed and trusted that in advancing through
the basic levels of the educational system we would be guaranteed access to
local and universal culture as well as a steady job. With the development
of science and technology and with changing social, political and economic
conditions, this belief no longer holds true for many people. We now know
that people need to return to the classroom (real or virtual) to be able to
fully enjoy universal and local culture, to keep the jobs that they have or
to improve their chances for greater opportunities.
Today certain areas of knowledge are growing at unprecedented rates, and the
discipline of teaching has been strengthened and enriched to such an extent
that we are now in a position to create the appropriate social spaces to offer
and to receive a quality education.
However, we also know that the promise of an education for all has yet to
be fulfilled, and that the problems of access to education in the region urgently
need to be resolved.
Finally, we need to think of how to respond to the multiple learning styles
that make up the identity of individuals and social groups, so as to also
provide an education that is useful to everyone. Certainly each of us has
an idea on how to offer greater access to better education.
